Charles Smith

Charles Smith Charles Smith (Playwright, Free Man of Color) is a member of the Playwrights Ensemble at the Tony Award- winning Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago, alumni playwright of the Tony Award-winning New Dramatists in New York, and a recipient of the 2008 Ohio Arts Council Individual Excellence Award. 

His plays have been produced in Australia, Off - Broadway and around the country by theaters such as Victory Gardens, The Acting Company, Indiana Repertory Theatre, People’s Light & Theatre Company, The Goodman Theatre, Penumbra, Ujima Theatre Company, St. Louis Black Rep, New Federal Theatre, Seattle Repertory Theatre, and Berkeley Repertory Theater. Free Man of Color was recently produced Off-Broadway under the title Freed, and his play Knock Me a Kiss will open Off-Broadway in November. 

His play Denmark was the inaugural World Premiere production of the newly renovated Victory Gardens at the Biograph Theater. His play Pudd’nhead Wilson enjoyed a twenty-two city national tour, and his plays Takunda and City of Gold enjoyed tours of the west coast. His play Les Trois Dumas was recently produced in Adelaide, Australia and his most recent play, The Gospel According to James, was commissioned and will receive its World Premiere production by the Indiana Rep in March of 2011 followed by a production by Victory Gardens in May.

His other plays include Freefall, The Sutherland, Sister Carrie, Black Star Line, Jelly Belly, Young Richard, and Cane. He is currently Distinguished Professor at Ohio University where he is head of the Professional Playwriting Program.
