AND CALENDER LISTINGS
COLONY THEATRE COMPANY
December 9th, 2002…Burbank, CA…The Colony Theatre Company is delighted to announce the fifth and final production of its 2002 – 2003 “Season of Discovery,” the Los Angeles premiere of DONNA McKECHNIE: INSIDE THE MUSIC, which will open on Saturday, April 12th and continue through Sunday, May 11th at the Colony Theatre, 555 North Third Street (at Cypress) in the heart of the Burbank Media Center. This will be the first fully-realized production of this show ever staged.
INSIDE THE MUSIC is based upon the true stories of Ms. McKechnie’s life. As a young dancer raised in the Midwest, she literally runs away to New York to chase her dreams of becoming a Broadway performer. Through poignant and funny insights, the show traces the struggles of a young Broadway dancer who chooses to dance to her own beat. With her first big break in the Broadway musical HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, she begins her journey, taking her dreams from a vivid fantasy life to a triumphant reality as a Broadway star. INSIDE THE MUSIC also pays tribute to and celebrates many of the people who helped her career including Gwen Verdon, Bob Fosse, Michael Bennett, Frank Loesser, Leonard Bernstein, Cy Coleman, Fred Astaire and Stephen Sondheim. With text by acclaimed playwright Christopher Durang and based on original material by Donna McKechnie, INSIDE THE MUSIC has captivated critics and audiences alike wherever it has performed.
Donna McKechnie appeared on Broadway in the Theatre Guild’s production of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s STATE FAIR for which she was nominated for a Drama Desk Award and received the Fred Astaire Award for Best Female Dancer. She is best known for her Tony Award-winning (Best Actress in a Musical) performance as Cassie in A CHORUS LINE. She re-created the role in the first English speaking companies in Tokyo and Paris. Regionally, Ms. McKechnie has played most of the memorable musical leading ladies. Recently, she starred in A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, GYPSY and MACK & MABEL for the Reprise Series in Los Angeles. She has the distinction of playing the three major female characters in FOLLIES, garnering rave reviews and standing ovations: Phyllis at the Drury Lane in London, Sally at The Paper Mill Playhouse and most recently, Carlotta for the Reprise production, where she stopped the show every night with her rendition of “I’m Still Here.”
Barbara Beckley, Producing Director of the Colony Theatre comments, “What a way to end our first extraordinary season as an Equity theatre! To be able to present Donna’s show to our subscribers and to all of the theatre-lovers of Los Angeles is truly a dream come true.
