Press Release: THE AWARD-WINNING COLONY THEATRE COMPANY RECEIVES $50,000 CHALLENGE GRANT

Anonymous Donor Wants Community to Support Burbank's "Jewel in the Crown"

April 7, 2004…Burbank, CA…The Colony Theatre Company announces that it has  received a challenge grant from an anonymous donor in the amount of $50,000 -  the largest single donation in its history - to support the theatre as a  "treasured cultural resource" in the city of Burbank.  The donor challenges the  business community of Burbank, as well as its civic leaders, to seize this unique  opportunity to invest in the quality of life in the community by stepping up  and supporting its cultural health.

The Colony Theatre Company is one of the crown jewels of the Los Angeles  theatre community.  Winner of countless awards including the coveted  Ovation  Award (including Ovations for "Best Play" for the past two years in a row), The  Colony has produced the Los Angeles premieres of such Broadway hits as SIDE SHOW  and THE LARAMIE PROJECT, timeless classics such as Lillian Hellman's TOYS IN  THE ATTIC, and world premiere productions of BEA[U]TIFUL IN THE EXTREME and  CLUTTER: The True Story of the Collyer Brothers Who Never Threw Anything Out.   The company has been voted "Best Live Theatre" by the readers of the Burbank  Leader for three years in a row, and has appeared for the past two years on the  Encyclopedia Britannica Almanac's list of "25 Notable US Theatre Companies."

Producing Artistic Director of the Colony Theatre Barbara Beckley is  delighted.  "This is such an affirmation of our work and of our value to the  community.  It is especially welcome in the light of all the recent cuts in arts  funding, which have had a significant impact on us.  Since we made Burbank our home  in 2000, we have been tremendously gratified by the support we've received.   This grant affords us a real chance to secure our future.  We are hoping to  rally the community, the government, and the businesses of Burbank to come  forward with matching funds to insure that the Colony will continue to produce world  class theatre in the heart of Burbank for many years to come."

For further information, or to participate in this challenge grant and  support the arts in Burbank, please contact Barbara Beckley at 818/558-7000 X13.
